Originally this was the site of a Benedictine Priory founded in 1079 dedicated to St. Mary. This was demolished in 1539 during the Reformation.

The current house was originally a hotel / coaching Inn; The Peacock Hotel.

Work on the gardens as we currently see them started in 1999 and the development is on-going.
